The Tofino Top has quickly become a TNT pattern for me! I love the loose fit and how it works in so many fabrics. I especially like it in rayon/viscose because it has that breezy summer shirt look. I knew I wanted to make a rayon Tofino for my upcoming vacation and I decided to go one step further and make a matching set!

This gorgeous fabric is from Blackbird Fabrics and it is called “Celestial Bodies”. It is currently out of stock but I think they are bringing it back soon. I have a mild obsession with moons and suns and so this fabric was an instant buy for me. I just LOVE the design, especially the way the elements are arranged in little windows, almost like tarot cards. I got lots of it because I loved it so much, so I had enough for the matching set. It took 5 meters to make this one because of the pattern matching, but I kept all of the scraps and I plan to make another top using the leftovers!
The design of this fabric presents some challenges. The print is large scale, it has very eye-catching elements and shapes, and it has vertical and horizontal lines. I didn’t want to break it up too much, so the Tofino Top was an ideal fit for the fabric. Each side of the top can highlight full panels of the print. Tofino is boxy and so the side seams are great for matching horizontal and vertical lines.
For the pants, I wanted something loose and high waisted, so I decided to use our June Pants pattern and modify it slightly. I added 1” to the side seam of the front and back pattern pieces, so 4” of ease was added all the way around. This made for a looser fit and a wider leg. I also lengthened the pants to be full length, not cropped.
I decided to continue the vertical lines of print down from the shirt onto the pants. This worked really well! I was even able to pattern match across the garments, so the shirt and pants form an uninterrupted pattern. Even with the shirt tucked in, it looks the same! I am really proud of this pattern matching as I have never done this before.
As far as styling this make, it does share the age-old problem of a matching set - it looks like pajamas. This is only exacerbated by the fact that the print has moons on it and is a nice soothing blue colour. With that said, I don’t care! It is so beautiful and I feel amazing wearing it. I love how it moves and fits and feels. I am not planning to relegate it to the PJ pile, I am going to wear it as a stylish matching set or as separates. I wore it around the resort we stayed at on holiday and it felt very cool and fun to wear! I like it tucked in for a more dressy vibe and loose for ultimate comfort.
This is the first of several Tofino Tops I have planned for this summer! It is such a delightful sew and I have so many fabrics I’d like to pair it with. I love how it looks with shorts, with jeans, and layered over swimwear. I hope you give it a try!
